A Promotional Products Primer - By: Mark Yokoyama

The world of promotional products is wide and vast. From key chains to massage chairs and trade show giveaways to direct mail, there are thousands of products that can be used in thousands of ways. The possibilities are seemingly endless—and that can be a little overwhelming. When you’re not fluent in marketing and are not used to purchasing customized goods wholesale, trying to come up with a successful promotion can be a daunting task. That’s why at ePromos we are dedicated to using our expertise to make the process of creating effective promotional marketing products easy for our clients.

What are promotional items?
Promotional items are products that have been custom imprinted with a logo and/or message for use in marketing or advertising. Many everyday items, such as pens, mugs and notebooks, become promotional items when imprinted with a company name or logo. Other products, such as stress balls, lanyards and koozies, make popular promotional products and are rarely seen out of this context. You may be surprised at the variety of things that can be imprinted—USB flash drives, for example, probably don't come to mind immediately when you think about promotional items. The bottom line is that pretty much anything can be imprinted, and the uses of promotional products are so broad there's a situation when any item may be the perfect part of a promotion.

What do promotional products do?
Promotional products can help you achieve a wide variety of business oriented goals. A well executed promotional product can drive traffic to your trade show booth, remind someone who to call when their car breaks down, provide a memorable introduction to a new product or service-- you name it, they can do it. Like all forms of marketing and advertising, a successful promotion must start with a solid understanding of the target audience and a clearly defined goal. The product and its artwork should then be chosen based on what would best meet this goal within the context the product will be used.

What factors do I need to consider when purchasing promotional products?
One of the most important aspects of choosing the right product for your needs is considering how you will customize it. Beyond just the item’s function, its price, size of its imprint area, the number of colors that can be printed on it and its production time required may all influence your final selection. For this reason, customization options should always be considered as a part of product selection.

Does it have to be this complicated?
Luckily, it does not. Because of our years of experience helping buyers put together effective promotional products, we hope that you will think of us as your personal promotional marketing department. Most companies don't create their own television advertising, and that's probably a good thing-- sometimes giving an outside company control of your promotional activity lends a fresh perspective, because they are removed from your day-to-day activities. They can put together promotional programs you would not normally think of. Think of your promotional products company like an advertising agency-- they can turn your goals and ideas into a promotional item than can achieve them.
