A Healthy Alternative To Caffeine - By: Tamar Slay

Did you know that when taken in huge amounts, caffeine can be addictive and damaging to the brain? Some people, however, just love it too much that it has become unhealthy for them. In fact, this substance can cause harmful effects such as heart palpitation, nervousness, increase heart rate, abnormal muscle contractions, and indigestion when taken in uncontrolled dose. As an alternative, decaffeinated versions of the beverages containing caffeine like coffee and tea are offered in the market.
There are a lot of types of teas which all have different levels of caffeine content. For instance, it is known that the caffeine content of black tea is much greater than green tea’s. So if you prefer black tea over green tea but you want to remove the caffeine substance, you can try doing the decaf tea procedure. All you need to do is to put the tea of your choice in boiling water with increased percentage for about twenty seconds. When you pour out the water and prepare the used tea again, you can decrease its caffeine content up to ninety percent.
Scientifically speaking, the decaffeination process includes the use of solvents which are probably carcinogens. Although there are more natural and safer alternatives for the process of decaffeination, most companies do not utilize them because they are more expensive. Due to the lowering or removal of the caffeine content of the tea, one may worry about the decreased levels of antioxidants the tea contains and eventually the health benefits it may give. What you can do is to drink more of the decaf tea to get the same amount of antioxidants as the regular tea, without getting any unhealthy effects in the body.
One of the health benefits of decaffeinated tea extract is the prevention of cancer. The tea contains catechins that hold back the development of cancer tumors as shown by some clinical research and studies. In fact, the US FDA even attested that the tea extract helps in the prevention of breast and prostate cancer.
A decaffeinated tea also provides the health benefits found in regular green teas such as accelerating the metabolism while exercising and burning more calories to lose weight. Moreover, decaf tea can likewise deter the formation of blood clots and lower down the cholesterol level of one’s body.
If you haven’t been drinking tea because of its caffeine content, you can always opt for decaf tea that has the same health benefits of any regular tea. The only difference is that with decaf tea, you enjoy a cup with its usual health benefits but without increasing your caffeine level intake.
