Situated in the South West of England, Devon is home to a number of stunning attractions to suit everyone’s taste including family leisure parks, stunning coastal walks, picturesque seaside towns and villages and miles of golden sandy beaches offering a place to retreat and experience an array of water sports available.

Along with its beaches and attractions, Devon offers a wide selection of accommodation including coastal guesthouses, family caravan parks, self-catering apartments by the sea and an array of luxury Devon hotels situated in the heart of the countryside and perched on the edge of the dramatic Devon coastline.

Beaches along the South Devon coast are some of the best in the UK, if not the world. From small sandy shores and hidden coves to the larger family beaches there is a vast amount to choose from. South Devon beaches can be enjoyed all year round – the majority of beaches allow dogs in the winter months, a time which is usually the best to enjoy a quiet walk without the hustle and bustle of the summer crowds.

Here is a brief guide to some recommended beaches in South Devon:

Bigbury on Sea
This large beach is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is perfect for families and a haven for walkers as there a number of coastal walks to experience. When the tide is out you can walk across the causeway to Burgh Island which is home to the famous Burgh Island Hotel. Alternatively at high tide there is a unique sea tractor which takes guests across the water. There is a cafe and toilets on the beach, and this beach is very popular with windsurfers, kite surfers and just surfers so if any of those take your fancy then this is the beach to experience such water sports.

Hope Cove
Hope Cove is wonderfully sheltered beach situated near Salcombe. It is popular with families and is also an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The beach is close to the village of Inner and Outer Hope which offer small shops and a choice of places to eat. There are toilets and disabled access to the beach.

Soar Mill Cove
Soar Mill Cove is situated quite near to Hope Cove. It is a small hidden beach which is only accessible from the coastal path so it could be quite difficult for families to access it, however, it offers a perfect stop off for keen walkers. It is also accessible by boat or canoe from Salcombe. Although it can be hard to access, it is worth the visit.

East Portlemouth Beach
East Portlemouth beach is situated opposite the beautiful coastal town of Salcombe just adjacent to the village of Portlemouth. It is perfect for families and just purely relaxing and offers a quieter beach compared to the ones in and around Salcombe. You can access the beach from the village or you can hop on a ferry at Salcombe and sail across the estuary. Additionally there is a cafe near the beach which serves organic local delicacies.
