Alcohol is everywhere. On TV, on the news, in magazines. We saw our parents drink when we were young. Why then, is alcohol something you potentially need to be rehabilitated from? Why, exactly, are there alcohol rehab centers for something so pervasive in culture and in life?

After a certain age, alcohol is legal in most of the world. There are laws about driving and drinking in public, but to a large extent, your behavior is up to you.

They break old patterns and make new ones. They sober you up and start you over.

There are various treatments, depending on the center. Most will start out with a period of detox. No more alcohol. Let it sweat out of your system. Then, some will start you with a 12-step process, where you learn about alcoholism as if it's a disease. Others will put you into therapy, either one-on-one or in groups, to talk about the underlying reasons for your decisions. What's really going on, they wonder, that you could be putting yourself in this situation?

Passages in Malibu and the Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage are two upscale alcohol rehab centers that are well known for their methods. You'll often see them on the news with regard to celebrities that are trying to kick their habits, just the same as anyone else.
