A Bankruptcy Lawyer Could Have Solved That Problem - By: Aaliyah Arthur

In an effort to save money, many people turn to do-it-yourself projects. They install their own floor tiles, change their own oil and some women skip the hair salon to take care of their own hair. There are some things, however, that should not be done without help. A bankruptcy lawyer, for example, is an expert in their field. There are things they know that the average person doesn't, even the person who puts forth their best effort to try to figure things out.

Take a young man who graduated from an Ivy League school a few years ago and accumulated hundreds of thousands of dollars in loans. He finally found a job in his field, but he's now struggling to pay rent, his car note and other bills on top of his loans. His loan payments are nearly as much as his rent. He even decides to get credit cards just to help him with monthly expenses. He ends up running up his credit cards and getting behind on his payments. So, to help alleviate some of the debt and stress, he is forced to file for bankruptcy.

Using the advice of one of his friends, he decides he will try to file himself, without the help of a bankruptcy lawyer. He believes it will help him save money, seeing as though he is already virtually broke. As a result, he begins visiting the library in search of books on the subject. He stays up all hours of the night researching, trying to prepare for his case filing.

After his friend notices that he is having a little trouble, he decides to help out. So, they begin studying together and doing extensive internet research. They visit several online forums hoping they can get all of their questions answered. At one point, the young man gets fed up with the process and begins to seriously consider hiring a bankruptcy lawyer. So, he decides to tell his friend.

"Yeah, I've been thinking and I'm getting a little fed up with all of this research," he said with a sigh. "I think I'd rather let a bankruptcy lawyer handle this, because I haven't had much sleep over the past couple of weeks with all of this studying."

His friend quickly intervened.

"No, I don't think that's a good idea," he said. "You're already in deep financial trouble. Why would you hire a bankruptcy lawyer who's going to end up taking all of your money anyway?"

Again, the young man decides to take his friend's advice. Finally, the day before his court appearance arrives. He's enjoying what should be the end of a long and stressful process, when his cellphone rings.

"Hello," he says.

"Yes, this is Lisa Bankston calling from the Greenville City Court," she said. "I regret to inform you that your case has been thrown out because you did not submit your paperwork properly. However, you are free to file again."

Shocked, confused and disappointed, the young man hangs up the phone and hangs his head in shame.
