Within 24 hours of having your last cigarette you will be able to feel the health benefits of your decision. There are many reasons to quit smoking and none whatsoever to continue. Yes you may enjoy it as the nicotine has an addictive effect but it is doing catastrophic things to your body.

For a smoker to stop smoking it can be an extremely tough action to take. The decision to quit maybe an easy one but actually doing so will be far more difficult. There are two factors that will determine your success in quitting smoking for good. Firstly you must have the WILL to stay strong thereby fuelling the desire to avoid a relapse. Secondly you need to have the correct MINDSET to understand the effects and consequences of smoking and why you must stop immediately.

So how do you implement these factors in order to quit? In 7 straightforward simple steps you can stop smoking and begin to live a normal healthy life as a non-smoker.

1) Tell your friends and family: - Gaining emotional support especially from people close to you is very important. They need to be aware so as not to suggest you join them outside for a smoke. The temptation maybe too much to resist even though probably incidental.

2) Get rid of visual triggers: - The smell of a cigarette and ash lingers. Throw away the ashtrays, lighters, clothes and other items that all stink. Don't give yourself the opportunity to get yourself thinking about smoking again.

3) Ensure you have a plan: - Do you have ritual smoking breaks while at work at 11 o/c or what about after an evening meal. I understand that these will be especially hard to endure but you must plan ahead to cut these out with an alternative.

4) Fill the cupboards with healthy snacks: - You may find yourself particularly hungry and consequently over eat as nicotine act as an appetite suppressant. You obviously do not want to give up smoking to gain weight so stock up on healthy foods especially during the first couple of weeks after you quit. Your sense of tastes improves immediately after quitting and you'll enjoy fruit, vegetable and low fat foods so much more.

5) Set the date: - It's all very well saying you're going to stop smoking but you must set a date in black and white. Tell your friends and family that you will be associated with so they can respect it.

6) Ensure you remain busy: - On the day you quit you will feel anxious but by keeping busy you will think less and less about smoking. Become physically active in exercises that involve concentration to keep the mind and body occupied. Drinking plenty of water will also keep you hydrated and alert at all times.

7) Be positive and confident you can quit. You have spent time and energy planning how you will deal with the task ahead by following our tips for giving up smoking. Believe you can and you will do it if you persevere.

It's not too late to quit smoking. Ten of thousands of people are quitting every day around the world. You can be one of them. Give yourself the benefit of a longer, healthier and happier life while you still have a chance.
