6 Reasons why some Websites don't rank high - By: Andrew Davies

Just because you have a website it doesn’t mean that you’ll be making any money. Designing and creating a website really is just the beginning to the development of your website. Many people who create a pretty website are often disheartened every day not to see it ranked on the first couple of pages. When looking at their website and what they have done to promote it in the search engines, it is not difficult to see why they are not ranked. Here are a few common mistakes that website owners have regarding where their website lays in the hundreds, thousands if not millions of other sites:

1. No Title
This really is a no brainer. I have seen so many websites that have the name of the website in their title or even worse, just the name ‘Home’ or worse still ‘Untitled Document’. You need to put keywords in each webpage which will tell the search engine spider what the page is about. The title is the wording that appears at the top of your browser and in bold when you type in the search into the search engine. Without including your keywords in the title, the search engine, let alone your visitors, won’t know what your page is about.

2. No relevant content
Search engines love pages with content rather than just adverts. The search engine spiders will check to see if the title of the webpage matches the content of your webpage. If it doesn’t then it won’t match a result with the visitor’s search. Therefore, you need to use the title to advertise what the page is about and the page to write what you want the title to have portrayed. For example, if the title ‘SEO’, then the content on the page has to be about SEO not pottery.

3. Meta Description
You need to have a description of the page not only for the search engine to compare with the content and the title but also to assist your visitor to tell them what the page is about. Many internet marketers use the meta description as a really brief sales pitch which then makes the visitor click on the page.

4. No links
For off page SEO, linking is so important. It provides a ‘vote’ for the page from one site to another. Don’t depend on reciprocal linking to generate traffic to your site, but use one way, or inbound links, to advertise the pages and give further resources and information to the search engine spider.

5. Time
Ultimately, for you to have well ranked webpages, it will take time. Nothing is immediate. In fact, it is considered that it takes approximately 2 to 3 months as a minimum before you will see any form of ranking return for your efforts. If you accept this and use the 2 to 3 months to generate traffic for your site, eventually your work will show.

6. Work with the Search Engine Spider
Don’t do anything foolish and try and trick the search engine into ranking your site. It may pay off for a week but it could get you banned. You need to develop your site gradually, make it easier for the search engine to crawl, and ultimately make the site user friendly to the search engine spider.

Remember, for you to rank well, you have to work with the search engine spider not against it. If you can do everything possible to help the search engine by providing good content, unbroken links, valid descriptions and good keyword results then the search engines will repay your efforts ultimately.
