5 Things You Must Do To Look After Your Hardwood Floors - By: kathy jhones

So youve just had a new hardwood floor laid and youre sitting back admiring the superb finish. But while its good to do that when you get started, its also important to maintain that finish. This can be done quite easily by putting into practice some simple rules. If you follow these rules on a regular basis, you can enjoy having floors that look just as good in ten years time (or more) as they do right now.

Make good use of runners and area rugs.

It might sound weird to want to cover up your newly refinished wood floor, but it can actually help in certain areas. Think about right inside your front door for example. Get a good quality door mat that catches most of the dirt and grime you tread in from outside. You may want to get a stylish runner too, to help prevent your hall from becoming filled with dirt and dust the whole time.

Watch out for scratches and similar damage, and get it repaired straightaway to prevent further damage.

No matter how careful you are, you can end up with scratches and put gouges in your wood floors occasionally. For example think about what might happen if you accidentally drop something heavy on your hardwood floor. If this occurs, get rid of any chips or loose material and then use some floor finish or wood filler to fill the hole so the damage is contained.

Sweep your hardwood floors on a daily basis.

Sweeping them regularly makes it easy to keep down the amount of dust and dirt that settles onto the floors. This is most commonly trodden in from outside. If you have door mats and runners you will cut down on this, but you cannot eradicate it completely. Keep a soft bristled broom handy so you can go over the floor quickly and effectively on a daily basis.

Be alert for spot cleaning tasks - clear up spills or marks as quickly as possible.

No matter how careful you are, you will always end up spilling things occasionally. The thing to remember is to mop up any spills as quickly as you possibly can. The sooner you do it the less damage will potentially be done.

Clean your floors regularly by using the right kind of cleaner.

Not all cleaners are suitable for using on a hardwood floor. You'll find you can get some chemical based or oil based cleaners for the job, but there are plenty of water based products that are much better to use. They smell better, do a good job and allow your floors to be easily re-coated down the road if they ever need to be. Just be sure you don't make the floor too wet when you clean it.

You can see that by applying these five points to your hardwood floor, you'll keep it looking as good as it possibly can for as long as possible. There is nothing as warming as a hardwood floor, especially when it looks its best.
