5 Things To Expect When White Water Rafting - By: Wally Tyler

White water rafting is an activity that has made its way into the weekend activity list of people all over the world. This refreshing and exhilarating adventure is perfect for that weekend warrior and average outdoorsmen. It's something that's great to do solo but more exciting when shared with family and friends. It’s easy to get hooked on white water rafting because no two experiences are ever the same. Ready to try it out? Or are you one who maybe interested but still needs a bit more convincing? Here are 5 things to expect when white water rafting to give you an idea of what you are missing out on.

1. Training

If you thought that white water rafting is the kind of activity where you get a few reminders and tips as you strap in, then before you can even ask a question you find yourself either frantically paddling for dear life or begging to have your feet back on solid ground, then think again. White water rafting is an activity that will have your heart racing, but also focuses on boater safety. Before you can even get your feet wet, you will be educated with the basic skills, safety precautions, paddling strokes, transporting the raft to and from the river and instructor signals.

2. Raft Light

White water rafting is a group activity and you must expect that there will be more people on the raft rather than personal belongings. Locker rooms are provided to safe keep all personal belongings and those not essential to the trip. The most that a raft will have on board is a first aid kit and storage for meals.

3. That Long and Winding Road to Adventure

White water rafting is set in a location where rivers are part of a secluded woodland area with little access to the road. Most whom are new to the sport should expect the white water rafting company to be located by the river. Most often than not, getting to and from the river will involve a road trip and minor trekking. Prepare for this pre-activity procedure by taking light snacks, a set of clothes and a towel that you can leave with the vehicle. It's also wise to have all bathroom business done before the trip just in case as the next bathroom break will probably be after the adventure. You can always find out in advance about the duration of the land travel so you can prepare for it.

4. You Will Never Stay Dry, No Matter How Hard You Try

After all it is white water rafting isn’t it? You'll be taking on the river rapids while paddling on an inflatable raft. With that description, there is no possible way that you could finish this activity dry. Being drenched is one physical state when white water rafting. Make sure that you wear light clothing and avoid ones made out of cotton because they absorb and retain water more than those made of quick dry materials, similar to bathing suits and wet suits.

5. A Hot Adventure Turned Cold

Even when you think that you will not be cold in a white water rafting activity, you may want to think again. Even if the rivers are located in warm locations, there is still a great possibility that you will feel cold. River waters can either come from a reservoir or melted winter snow, add to that the cool climate of surrounding mountain areas and there is a chance you'll get cold. The white water rafting company will inform you of the climate and water temperature you may face once you go rafting. Wetsuits are often utilized during cold environments and can be rented from the rafting company.

White water rafting is such an easy sport to engage in, whether as a recreation or for fitness. Either way, knowing what to expect from it will give you the opportunity to prepare and make sure that you experience nothing but exhilarating bliss that only this activity can give.
