5 Reasons to Consider Distance Learning - By: Selma Grace

Furthering education is a pursuit that most Americans dream of but many are too busy working to consider it seriously. Distance Learning is a fairly new concept that has totally changed the landscape of how to learn and where to learn it. There are five main reasons why anyone should consider Distance Learning.

1. Self Pacing

In Distance Learning, the student decides the overall pacing of the course. If a student is a quick learner, they may do all of the homework required in one sitting instead of having to wait for the professor to dole it out at a slower pace like in the traditional classroom.

2. Cost Efficient

Distance Learning is often far cheaper because professors understand that not all of the students will have access to the school book store. This means that more online sources are utilized and results in the students not having to buy the expensive textbooks that traditional students must buy.

3. New Skills

While working, it is hard to learn new skills but learning through the internet allows just that to happen. A student can learn about almost anything with the direction of a professor at any time of day. This reduces the pressures of work because a student has a goal that they are working towards and knows that the current job is just a temporary stepping stone on their path to success.

4. Less Intimidating

Many students are uncomfortable in a classroom, especially if they are a non-traditional student. This can result in not asking vital questions out of fear of looking incompetent. The anonymity of the internet helps reduce this fear because it is unlikely that a student will run into another student outside of the virtual classroom environment.

5. It is Different

Everyone should expand their experiences. By participating in something outside of the normal classroom environment, the Distance Learning student gains a valuable skill.

The real question becomes why a student would not consider Distance Learning? The benefits exist on both an emotional and financial level with very few viable reasons as to why it would not work for any given student.
