5 Most Popular Types Of Mopeds - By: Alexander Sutton

Who makes the best moped? Turns out there are some really good models on the market, from names you recognize in autos, motorcycles and even bicycles.

1. Italian mopeds are taking their share of the market. Since World War II, mopeds like the Vespa have transported soldiers, Hollywood stars and ordinary citizens alike. They are stylish, for sure, but these mopeds are also popular due to their durability. During the energy crisis of the 1970's, mopeds helped daily commuters stretch their fuel dollars getting to work, school and other necessary places. Now, in the new millennium, fuel prices are a major factor in commuters' purchases once more. Piaggio and other Italian models are also popular in the U.S. and in Europe.

2. Japanese mopeds are another major player. Honda is currently the largest moped manufacturer in the world. Yamaha is another popular Japanese moped, the longest running manufacturer of mopeds. Yamaha is an excellent choice for the street rider, but they also have quite a good reputation in racing. Riders often choose Japanese models for their speed and power.

3. American bikes are also a popular choice. Mongoose was founded in a garage in Southern California. For buyers who insist on "Made in the USA," Mongoose mopeds have an old-style bicycle look. Genuine Scooter is another American offering, based in Chicago, IL. This company got its start selling Italian mopeds, but eventually developed their own offerings, including the popular Roughhouse model.

4. Taiwan also offers a moped that is making an impression on western buyers. Kymco is gaining in popularity among young riders due to its retro look and affordability. Though these mopeds are lower in power and speed than the other selections, the low cost makes them attractive to students and those with an easy commute who need to save money on transportation.

5. Chinese mopeds are popular with economy-minded folks who are willing to become their own mechanic. These mopeds are less powerful and have lower speeds than Italian, Japanese and American mopeds, but their affordability is attractive to young people with the time and energy to replace parts and make modifications to the moped.

There are tons of models available, and each has their pros and cons. Basically, higher-priced Italian, Japanese and American mopeds have more speed and power. Lesser-known manufacturers command lower prices for their mopeds, but you will need to do regular work to keep them running. As far as fuel economy goes, any moped is far better than even the smallest economy cars. Mopeds are also easier to maneuver in tight spaces and when finding a place to park.
