5 Essentials for Saving Your Marriage - By: David Ernest

Couples who find their marriage going downhill need to know, that there are things you can do if you want to save your marriage. This is true even if your spouse is uncertain there is a problem or is not interested at all.

Going for divorce definitely shouldn't be taken lightly. If you think you might be heading down that road, then you can start today to work on your marriage and improve it and your life together.

Although marriages are all quite different, in order for a healthy and happy relationship to be maintained they all have the same basic requirements. The marriage relationship should have;
- open and honest communication with each other
- acceptance of each other just as you are
- and of course, love for each other
- ability to be forgiving of each other's mistakes
- willingness to make and spend time with each other

Communication is most certainly a key part in having a healthy marriage. Not being able to be open and honest with your partner, instead keeping what you are thinking and your emotions inside can lead to resentment. When you keep things inside it is impossible for your spouse to know when there are any problems in your mind. When a partner discovers a habit or something they don't like about your relationship, they shouldn't hesitate to start a conversation about it. But this conversation needs to happen in a non-confrontational and respectful way.

The next thing you need in your marriage is acceptance. Acceptance means that you are going to accept your spouse for who they truly are. That means if they are a bit or a lot messy with the way do the dishes you can deal with it. On the other hand if they are a neat freak, you will be able to deal with them mopping around your feet or cleaning up after you. You got to know that your spouse is not going to change just because you got married. Acceptance will also show that you love your spouse because you can't truly love them if you can't accept them.

Love is very important in a strong relationship. In our western world love is a really big deal even though we often get confused by it. Love to many is all about emotion and feelings. Yet love is also about commitment. Love is about wanting to and doing what is best for the person you love. If you truly love your spouse, you want to give them all the support that they need. If you truly love your spouse, you should always try to talk to them respectfully. These should be true even if they don't always support you or show you the same courtesy. Though throughout the years of our marriage we often get into a rut and get used to treating our spouse a certain way. Sometimes we forget how we should really treat our spouse.

Forgiveness is another aspect that marriage can't live without. Hanging on to your past hurts it will slowly erode your love for your spouse. Often we misunderstand forgiveness. Forgiving someone doesn't mean that you have to forget or condone the other persons hurtful behavior. What is does mean is that you are willing to accept what happened and understand that it was a mistake and that they are sorry. You can't let your desire for revenge or stubbornness get in the way of forgiveness.

Making time for each other is no less important than the others. Having a willingness to make spending time together a priority is showing them that you really care for them. Doing things together helps to affirm the bond that you share. It also gives each of you the chance to leave your responsibilities behind for a little while. It is therefore very important to find activities you both enjoy so it becomes easier to do this.

If you make these things a priority in your life and marriage it will go a long way to save your marriage. Not only that but your spouse will notice it for sure and start to follow your example and start feeling more free to show their love for you in the best way they know how.
