The most important and worthwhile things in life take work. Our relationships are one of the most worthwhile parts of our lives but are often overlooked. Spouses can easily become wrapped up in advancing and nurturing their careers, nurturing their children, or even nurturing others. But What about each other? A marriage relationship needs just as much work and upkeep, if not more. Maintaining this relationship may sound droll, but it can actually be quite fulfilling and fun.

There are so many activities that married couples can take advantage of. Don't try to cram as many marriage activities into one space of time as possible, but take them one at a time and enjoy how they deepen your relationship. Some activities may take more time and involvement and others may be as simple as asking each other some questions you may not have thought to ask before. Here are some activities that might help strengthen your marriage relationship.

There is always so much we ask of our spouses. We ask them to do this, or get that, or take care of something. It is great that we can ask our spouse to do things for us. We do not want to forget that being in service to someone is one of the truest forms of love and one of the best ways to show love. This weekend, concentrate solely on being of service to your spouse. Do not let them know, but look for ways to help them, support them, and do a little something extra for them. They will most likely see your generosity and love will spread contagiously through your family and relationships.

It's important to align your goals with one another. This doesn't mean that each spouse should have the exact same goes in life. What is important is that each partner knows each other's goals and supports and promotes them as they are inter-weaved within their own goals. Each spouse should sit down and write their top five priorities or goals in life. Then, come together and discuss them. Let each other know why your own goals are important and how you think they can be achieved together. This is a very important marital exercise as it promotes each spouse as a unique individual, yet ties their goals to one another creating a single strife and unity.

Listening is a talent in marriage. It takes work to be a good listener. Take a few days and work on not interrupting your spouse. Wait to express your opinion until your spouse is entirely finished expressing their own. This will show your spouse that you respect them a great deal and that you care about what they have to say, even if you think differently on a subject. It will be easy for your spouse to recognize this and therefore show the same respect back.

Take an evening and laugh together. If you have children, wait until they are in bed for the night. Then, grab a funny book, movie, game or anything that you both find particularly amusing. Have a great time enjoying each other's laughter. Earlier that day you can even go out to the movie store or book store and choose something together. Finding joy in small things and being able to laugh about them is simply a part of growing old together.

What would you do if money were no object? Have fun telling each other where you would travel, where you would retire, and what your dream house would look like. Then, talk about how you would be living your daily lives differently if money wasn't a concern. Is this immensely different than how you are living it now? How does this make you feel?

Use these activities to deepen your relationship and solidify the future. It's no secret that failed marriages ruin lives. It is a heart wrenching process that leaves us in pieces. Take the time to work on your marriage and show your spouse how much they mean to you. A solid foundation in marriage begins with intimacy and unity.
