4 Top Courier Safety Tips - By: Norman Dulwich

When it comes to driving advice, there’s no better source than a courier - given that their job involves being on the roads a high percentage of their waking time. There are plenty of little safety tips for driving which delivery professionals and non-delivery drivers alike can take advantage of to keep them safe on the roads. Here are a few of the best and most easily achieved safety measures to take when you’re out and about.

Buckle Up

While you’re legally required to wear a seatbelt, it can easily be forgotten in the heat of the moment – especially for a courier who may just be moving a vehicle a short distance at a depot, for instance. It’s important to make it a habit – and if a seatbelt doesn’t fit properly or causes discomfort, there are plenty of seatbelt ties that can help adjust where it sits on the shoulder to help long periods of driving pass more comfortably.

Drive Slowly

It’s very tempting to throw caution to the wind and drive quickly when you have someplace important to be – or you have a delivery schedule to keep to. Especially in situations such as driving late at night when there are fewer or no other vehicles on the roads, it is important to keep your speed under control when reflexes may be slightly slower than imagined.

Lock the Doors

Being a courier, your work will take you to plenty of different locations all around the country. It can be a wise move to lock the doors as you’re passing through areas that make you uneasy, or if you need to leave your vehicle for brief periods when delivering goods or making a brief stop. It always pays to make locking the doors a habit. It might take a little longer to lock and unlock every time – but the peace of mind will more than make up for it. A courier can’t risk their undelivered goods being taken by an opportunistic miscreant, and so this is a potentially hassle-saving tip.

Be Aware of Weather

If you’re on the road a lot, you encounter all sorts of weather – wind, rain, sleet, snow, baking hot days - and it’s well worth knowing the effects the weather will have on your vehicle. Learning how to help an engine cool off in hot weather, or slowing down and making sure your steering is accurate in snow is essential for a courier who needs to keep moving. One nasty example is the way braking is affected when rainwater coats the road – it may take just a moment longer for braking wheels to find purchase than a driver can afford!
