3D displays are having a huge impact in the world of entertainment. We've already been treated to flood of films at the cinema featuring this new technology. Remarkably it's about to enter our homes. 3D television sets are about to go on sale back by broadcasters offering channels in 3D. The technology is currently expensive so tends to be the preserve of marketers rather than consumers at the moment. Advertising using holograms at events like trade fairs has been getting a great response for example and many films and video games are being promoted using 3D marketing gimmicks.

3D displays work by tapping into the way people perceive natural depth. Each of our eyes sees the world from a different perspective. Our brain merges the two and then calculates how far away an object is. When each eye receives a different image, this creates the 3D effect. Up until now you've needed special glasses to view 3D films or to view 3D TV sets, but not holograms.

The latest technology does away with the need for glasses. After all, who wants to sit at home watch TV with a stupid big pair of goggles stuck to their face? Instead, lenses are attached the screen of the TV unit instead. More comfortable, but you have some limitations. Like set viewing distance for example. The clever feature is the parallax barrier. This is what controls where the light is directed and how it is viewed.

These TV sets aren't cheap, but people seem genuinely excited about the technology and seem ready to adopt early in order to experience more exciting TV entertainment at home. Don't forget the additional cost of glasses for all the family depending on which type of model you go for.

If the outlay is off putting, consider a rental. Rental firms are springing up and it's an ideal way to experience 3D at home, without forking out thousands of pounds for the privilege.
