3 Ways to Generate Ideas for Songwriting - By: Bradley Gwin

Songwriting is something which gets less difficult with repetition like so many different things in life. Once you've been songwriting for some time, your mind becomes used to creating song ideas by itself and gets in a system where it's frequently working and trying to come up with great melodies and great lyrics all by itself. If you are not yet there yourself, there are other things that you can do to generate ideas for songwriting that I use regularly.

In this article I will cover 3 ways to develop ideas for songwriting.

The first of these ideas for songwriting is to come up with a specific micro-genre (as I prefer to refer to it) where you want to write a song in the style of. If it helps you, envision a specific musician who you are fond of and want to compose a tune in the style of.

After you have some music ideas about which artist you wish to sound like or write like for this specific idea, that will start to release some of the blockages that were keeping you back to start with. In this way you are songwriting with a lot more organization versus getting a songwriting idea which could go an endless variety of different ways as in writing songs having an overwhelming number of choices can typically obstruct development on a song.

Another one of my favorite ideas for songwriting is to plan to write a tune that revolves around a precise hook. Think about what instrument will deliver that hook whether that's a a harmonica part, a guitar solo, or more commonly a vocal part.

When you commit yourself to coming up with a hook through a particular voice like that, coming up with a hook will be that much simpler and from there the remainder of the tune will come about. Writing songs is not always about skipping corners like this process involves, but occasionally it is just about getting to it. As soon as you get a structure you can take that and make adjustments to it later on if you like. Just getting started on an idea makes transitioning into connecting parts of that tune a lot simpler.

I have got one more very powerful idea for songwriting that is a technique I use to teach musicians as being amongst the single most successful ways to start a song idea out of nothing. You can make use of this technique whether you're totally new to writing songs or if you have been doing it for years; plenty of accomplished and talented songwriters use this technique on a daily basis to develop some of their most well-known tunes.
