3 Tips For Going Horse Riding - By: Hannah McEwen

Tip 1 - Whoa! Tip 2 - Stop! Tip 3 - Giddy up! And you are ready to mount on your adventure, right? Well, not exactly. There is more to riding a horse than just knowing the lingo from the westerns. You can choose horse rides just for the experience or choose riding a horse as long term endeavour, either way here are 3 real tips for going horse riding.

1. Research and pick your type of riding. Horse riding has different styles and variations depending on your personality and riding style you fancy. From the adventurous Western Rodeo style, to the elegant Dressage or Hunter Jumper, from the sporty Polo to the fast paced Show Jumping. Or maybe, you just want to explore the great outdoors trekking with a dependable steed. The next best thing to having a horse of your own is to actually know what to do with it and how to enjoy riding a horse. As soon as you have found your riding style it will be much easier to single out the best horse riding lessons and schools in your area.

2. Exercise for the activity. When I had my first horse riding experience, the most prominent memory of riding a horse were my aching muscles. It made me think, did I ride the horse or did I take the horse for a piggy-back ride? But since I loved the experience, I found myself back on the saddle again so to speak, and still ended up with the same annoying aches. After some whining and minor complaining, I soon learned that supplementary exercise prepared your muscles and physique for riding horses. Adequate cardio, stretching and strength training will actually give you more time on the saddle and less time in the barn with liniment. Muscle strengthening and flexibility programs such as yoga and pilates are perfect exercise supplements to your horse riding fitness regime.

3. Focus on the learning. There is a lot to learn and tendency is you would rather saddle up, giddy up and talk about the horse’s breed and temperament later. This is okay if you were riding a horse with the guide or horse trainer on foot leading the horse for you. When learning how to ride a horse, you need to focus on one important thing, learning how not to fall and learning the proper way if you ever fall. When you master this, everything else will follow. You will learn about “spookies” a term used to describe when a horse suddenly goes nuts and out of control because something has frightened them, as well as emergency dismounts, breaking a fall and emergency stops. During your horse riding lessons you'll learn lots from on the ground schooling and treat your first saddle up as the practical application. Being aware of such safety procedures will ultimately give you more time in the saddle riding a horse.

Three simple tips for such a great activity. Riding horses has captivated millions of people all over the world through out time. A sport full of heritage and adventure where man gets to experience one of the greatest creatures on earth.
