3 Good Reasons For Purchasing Travel Medical Insurance - By: Don Saunders

For a lot of us travel insurance is simply seen as one of a variety of extras which the travel agent will try to get us to add to our holiday package to assist in boosting his profits and to make our holiday even more expensive than it needs to be. Nevertheless, there are at least three excellent reasons for ensuring that you do not leave home without your international travel medical insurance policy in your suitcase.

First, travel insurance protects you from losing all of your financial investment in your holiday should an emergency arise which forces you to cancel your trip. This is particularly true when you are booking your holiday some time ahead because you never know what may happen in the weeks or months leading up to your departure. This said, by their very nature emergencies tend to appear at any time and without notice which makes this one type of protection which really should not be considered in terms of time.

It is only natural to feel that nothing is ever going to happen to us but a holiday trip can frequently involve a large up-front investment and the loss of these funds may well mean that you are unable to re-arrange your trip later on.

Second, travel insurance enables you to meet the cost of medical treatment both while you are in transit and at your destination and, in the event of a major accident or illness, will meet the cost of bringing you and your family back home if necessary.

Medical treatment may well be excellent abroad and it might even be considerably cheaper than it is at home. However, a stay in hospital could still leave you with a very large bill which eats deeply into your holiday spending money. It is also possible that medical care abroad will leave a lot to be desired and you may well need to cut your vacation short and head back home for the treatment you require.

Third, travel insurance will protect the value of your possessions both while you are traveling and at your destination so that you will be compensated in the event of loss.

If you have spent any time traveling then you will probably have suffered the loss of your luggage at some time and will know just how annoying and expensive this is. I shall not forget stopping off for a bite to eat on my way to the airport at the end of one holiday and very carefully securing my suitcase in the trunk of my hire car. When I returned to the car some thirty minutes later I discovered that someone had forced the lock on the passenger door and folded the back seat down to get into the boot and make away with my case.

I will also not soon forget sitting at a road junction one hot and sunny day in Portugal when a motorbike pulled up alongside the car and a boy reached in through the open passenger side window and snatched my mother's purse which was lying on the floor by her feet.

Traveling overseas is expensive at the best of times but heading off without suitable and adequate insurance can lead to bills that you simply cannot afford to pay. Accordingly, when you are making plans for a trip do not forget to add international travel medical insurance to your vacation list.
