Every day I make sure to study business and learn from not only my mistakes, but the mistakes of those whom I come into contact with.

Unfortunately, here are some of the universal career mistakes that business professionals make throughout their career.

While none of us can be perfect, a slight improvement in 1/3 of the mentioned areas should yield an increased amount of success and fulfillment in one's career.

Talking and Not Doing

I don't quite remember what I said, but I remember once telling my father that I was going to achieve something and before I could speak another breath, he said, "Well, shut up and go do it."

I must have been really yapping because "shut up" is a term my father infrequently uses, but I'm glad I was because it was the best piece of advice I've ever gotten.

As time goes on, I realize that there is nothing worse than a talker and nothing wrong with someone who is happy (or does not express discontent) with who they are or where they currently are.

Playing Into Negativity Around Them

Just because the two people who sit next to you are unhappy with their job, doesn't mean that you have to fit in by being negative.

Some corporate cultures are unhappy places.

Though, that doesn't mean that you can't get ahead within these companies.

Simply because some employees are unhappy in a company does not mean that the business is going to go under; some companies can thrive despite turnovers (actually the smartest ones can).

Focus on results and only results.

Yes, your boss may take their frustrations out on you because they are falling short and their boss is chewing them out, but if you get into the habit of focusing on your performance rather than wishing the person drop dead, you'll begin to see a world of difference.

p.s. This doesn't mean that you have to be a "cheerleader" because nobody likes a suck-up, but find a balance that favors the positive attitude more.

Attempting to Replace Lack of Talent with Arrogance

It's rare, but every now and again I come across very arrogant, yet empty individuals ("Clients we have to fire" as I refer to them) who attempt to replace some emptiness in themselves with over arrogance.

When you're over arrogant, you achieve a lot less in life than someone who is humble. Overly arrogant people turn many off and, thus create more roadblocks to success for themselves.

The best type of arrogance is self assuredness which comes from knowing oneself rather than a gaping amount of insecurity.
