3 Essential Tips to Help you Control Spending Money - By: KD Bickell

Although some people don't like to admit it, spending too much money is the root cause of most debt. For those who love to spend every cent they have (and more), a vital part of getting out of debt is learning how to better control how money is spent. Here are three tips that can help:

#1 – Start using cash: Using cash is perhaps the most effective way to understand exactly how much spending money you actually have on a weekly or monthly basis. This approach might also make you think twice about those impulse purchases. Parting with a large portion of your pay check for a pair of shoes you don't need is a lot different than simply swiping a card.

#2 – Allocate specific amounts for specific costs: If you have debt problems, there is a good chance that you are overspending in one or several specific areas (food, drinks, clothing, transportation, etc.). By breaking up your pay check into "chunks" and allocating a certain amount for each category, you can help avoid overspending in one or more areas. You will also get a better picture of what your problem areas actually are so you can focus on limiting unnecessary spending and controlling how you spend your money.

#3 – Stop using credit: Using credit to make purchases is rarely a good idea. Although some people use credit only in emergencies or when they know they will have the money to pay off the balance in full at the end of the month, others use those cards as a way to supplement their income. If you have serious problems with spending money you don't have, stop using credit cards altogether. This will make it much more difficult if not impossible for you to overspend.

If you REALLY want to get out of debt and reduce your spending, you'll need to make some difficult choices. So grab your checkbook & credit card bills and look at your spending habits for the last few months. Then pick out a couple of expenses to eliminate -cable TV, eating out for lunch or dinner, magazines, whatever it takes - so you can regain control of your spending.
