25 STDs Are Out There Waiting - By: John Bogut

A sexually transmitted disease (STD) is a broad term that categorizes more than 25 different types of sexually transmitted diseases that are spread through sexual contact. With so many variations of diseases, it is hard to know what is what, and what to do if you believe you have come in contact with a certain STD.

To begin with, the most common sexually transmitted diseases are AIDS, chlamydia, herpes, gonorrhea, syphilis and genital warts. Chlamydia is the most common STD, with an estimated three million new cases diagnosed every year. If caught early, it can be treated with antibiotics. If not, chlamydia can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, which can in turn lead to infertility.

The most common telltale signs or symptoms that may indicate an STD are genital sores, pain and itching. In men, symptoms can also include penile discharge, pain during urination, and testicular swelling/pain.

The majority of people have heard about HIV and how there is no cure, and the horror stories that are attached to this disease, but people do not realize that there are other STDs that can also have serious consequences. For instance, syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia can result in long-term problems such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), which can lead to sterility and chronic pelvic pain. There is also human papilloma virus (HPV), which causes genital warts, has been linked to the development of cervical cancer.

Luckily, some STDs are curable, such as chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis. They will not, however, go away by themselves. You need to seek treatment. The only way to do this is by being tested for a sexually transmitted disease to make sure whether you have and STD or not. However, it should be noted that there is no 100% accurate test for STDs.

Unfortunately, sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV, HPV, herpes and hepatitis B, are not curable. However, they are treatable, so it is very important that you seek medical attention. If you suspect you may have any of these diseases, or even if you have experienced symptoms or irregularities regarding your genitalia and reproductive system, then it is in your best interest to look into getting tested for a sexually transmitted diseases as quickly as you can. That way you will be able to be treated for appropriately and effectively in the quickest and timeliest of fashion.
