100 years of plowing the land. Where’s the harvest? - By: Mariaclara de Filipina

Freedom! That is the sounding voice that echoed in El Viejo. For more than 300 years of oppression from the race of Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, finally the dream of Andres and Pepe has been fulfilled. The dreams of never again will freedom ever leave the house of their offspring.

But to what is happening right now, it seems like their dreams are buried together with their dead body. Still, poverty is in Juan’s backyard, his kids are still muddled with dirt, and the streets are still full of mud. Until, a man named Ninoy came, he started the fire, but unfortunately, his life was not enough to continue his pursuit of freedom from the grave.

Then at last Juan’s race gathered in Edsa, where they succeeded to poison the termites in the palace. It worked, but is it still working at the time. It’s been more than a decade now, and we are still getting a spoiled system. Is it really our fault, for entrusting our liberty to those predators? From Cory to Gloria, would we ever see the sun shining on the east again, would that same flag beckon on our free land one more time? And would this coming 2010 election be the start of new reforms?

I start to look back and see that history unfolds our resiliency as countrymen of this great nation, we might have been on the ground several times, and we might have been in the center of the animal kingdom, but our hopes of not giving up and always looking forward for a new day, surely saves us from the dangers in the land.

May it be Jose or Ninoy or even Lapu-Lapu, they were separated by time but they are connected with the same vision that this land will finally breakthrough, and that secret is laid on everybody’s individuality, it is not to physically deteriorate the factors, instead it is to make known to every Filipino that the changes must begin within themselves.
