10 Ways to Get the Career in Hairdressing you Want - By: Xavier Diaz

With the UK economy in a state of trauma and the number of unemployed increasing each week, not only is it increasingly difficult to get any job, let alone a career in a competitive industry like the hairdressing industry. Let's face it even 2 years ago you would have not got a stylist's job by turning up an interview with a funky hairstyle and a pair of GHD straighteners hanging out of your bag. Competition is fierce in this industry, so I have prepared a small list of tips you could use to help you get one step closer to the job you want.

Keep Learning
Within this ever changing industry it is vital that you continue to update your techniques and knowledge of the industry. Even if you have got 10 years experience of the industry it is vital that you don't get left behind and seek to improve your grasp of the business and its changing fashions.

Try to Lead the Way
Being average is okay and in most careers you can get by as one of the crowd. Hair dressing is a world away from this, if you are going to get the best jobs in this industry you need to put the effort into to being number one and the best. The top salon only want the best, so focus on being the best you can be, if you can't be the best, give the perception of greatness as this can work just as well.

Be Prepared at all Times
Every interview you go to make sure you have your scissors, products, ghd straighteners and some ideas. Chances are that if you are doing well in the interview and there is a shop full of clients, you may find that the person interviewing you may put your skills to the test. It's highly unlikely you will be cutting any hair, but you may be asked to style someone hair, maybe even the person interviewing you!

Quality CV Complete With Pictures
One tip I give to many young wannabe stylists is to have a great CV, don't forget to put some images of the work you have done. Your CV is going to be what makes the first impression and even though you in the creative services, don't fall fowl of having a poor quality CV. Try to include a mini portfolio of your work, this makes a huge difference to anyone looking through a batch of CV's. Make your CV standout, but only do this once you have a sold CV.

Motivation Will Lead to Success
Never give up, no matter how many people reject you or think your ideas are too far ahead of the time. Focus on what makes you happy about the industry and never lose sight of your dream job. It's out there, but you will never get it if you walk around with your head down. Stay positive and focus on success.

Stand Out From the Crowd
A top salon is not going to take someone into their business if you have nothing new to offer, their clients expect that best and want to be inspired. Don't worry about being quirky, zany or high end fashion, focus on having something that no one else has. Be able to do something with a pair of GHD straighteners that no one else can.

Well there it is, good luck and remember that positivity is the best attribute you can have. So rewrite that CV, get a new set of GH straighteners, buy some new interview clothes and make sure you smile. The hair styling job you want is out there, so go get it. Hope I helped.
