Most weddings in India still take place during the winter season when people can really enjoy the rich Indian delicacies. Dates are decided after consultation with priests and then a date is selected out of several auspicious ones as per the convenience of the bride, groom and close relatives.
Now, if the date fixed for the wedding falls in the monsoon months, you’ll have to be quite careful about several things. Here are some tips that might come of good use if you are planning to hold a monsoon wedding –
1. Check The Date – Recently New Delhi was host to a whopping 40,000 weddings on the same night. It has been estimated that there are at least 10 -15 such dates when the city witnesses thousands of weddings around the same time. On such dates often many of your guests might be invited to several weddings and may have to skip the one you are hosting. You’ll probably want to consult your family members and close friends and relatives about the tentative dates you have in hand.
2. The Type of Venue – Different people have different choices. Many people simply love the extravagance, beautiful tents and the feel of an outdoor wedding. Some people like the simple, neat and clean atmosphere of banquet halls. Decide what kind of a wedding you would like to host, garden wedding or an indoor wedding.
3. An Outdoor Venue – If you’ve chosen an outdoor venue for hosting a monsoon wedding then you must be well prepared. You must be well prepared if starts to pour on your chosen day. To begin with, you might want to buy a few umbrellas from the wholesale market and keep at the venue to help your guests stay dry in case it starts to pour.
4. An Indoor Venue – An indoor venue can certainly protect you and your guests from the rain gods and unannounced storms, but it significantly reduces the scope for having elaborate decorations which a garden wedding can afford.
5. Special Considerations For An Outdoor Venue – Even if you have decided to take a chance and host your big night in the open, make sure you have some protected enclosure in the event of an unexpected downpour. Waterproof tents are quite common these days and your tenting vendor should be advised well in advance to use them. Also instruct your caterer to keep the food properly covered so that unexpected rainfall doesn’t spoil the food and the mood of your guests.
6. Special Considerations For An Indoor Venue – An indoor venue can become quite stuffy if it is not properly ventilated. Try and visit the indoor venue you have chosen when a wedding or a similar function is being held there to get a first hand idea of how effective it really is. Make sure your indoor venue has several air conditioners or good ventilation systems installed. Also, make sure the venue has all fire safety equipments installed and in working condition.
7. Dresses – The bride should absolutely avoid silk and heavy ‘lehenga’. Cotton, Chiffon and Georgette are fabrics which are lightweight and help absorb sweat. Monsoon months can get quite humid and heavy or synthetic fabrics can leave the bride quite uncomfortable. Similarly, the groom too should avoid a heavy dress material and should go for a soft and light fabric.
8. Make-Up – Well, this is something that no bride should ignore. You should book your make-up salon well in advance and let your beautician know beforehand that you are looking for waterproof make-up. Even a slight drizzle can spoil your make-up if it isn’t water proof.
9. Staying Arrangements – Make sure that all of your outstation guests are accommodated close to the wedding venue. Also, make sure that they have access to umbrellas and extra set of towels in case they get wet while coming towards or going back from the venue.
10. Hygiene – Monsoons often bring along with them several water borne illnesses like typhoid and diseases like food poisoning. You must ensure that as far as possible only packed or bottled water is given to your guests and food is cooked in a clean place and not a place where there are insects crawling and flying around.
Monsoons have for long been referred to as the romantic season. A monsoon wedding can be as memorable as any other wedding provided you take care of small points and prepare well in advance for your special day.
