Avoid possible web design problems by asking a potential web designer the right questions before hiring them. Here are 10 questions you should ask before hiring a web designer and the reasons why you should ask these questions.

1: Can you give me a line item or price breakdown for the website design price?

Why: This helps you determine where the most expensive parts of the project will be and where you can cut costs, if you need to, in order to make the quote fit your budget. Find out the cost of website design work and how much the designer charges per graphics. Find out the cost of copy creation and uploading. Don’t forget to get a price breakdown of software development and

2: Do you have a portfolio of websites you have built that are currently online?

Why: This shows you the web designer’s professional abilities. The more websites, the better. Twenty is a good number to start with. It’s not crucial that the sites in the design’s portfolio be active and online, but it makes it easier for you to see what the company can provide.

3: Do you have references?

Why: To see if the designer has a history of keeping clients happy, although active sites the website designer has created can also act as proof.

4: Do you provide ongoing support and what are your rates for this?

Why: To find out if the company/contractor will do ongoing content changes, site maintenance and support and software licensing, and how much it will cost you.

5: Who will have ownership to the site?

Why: You want to find out if you will own the design, layout, content and graphics if you think you may want to use these features in other marketing material. Double check to make sure that whoever is providing the hosting doesn’t demand ownership even if the website designer doesn’t.

6: Who is my primary contact and how do I get in contact with someone after regular hours should a problem arise?

Why: You want to know who you’ll be dealing with and your options should problems happen with your site, a major marketing tool, outside of office hours.

7: How long will my site development take?

Why: It’s important to know when your site will be online so you can begin promoting it.

8: Is a site redesign possible?

Why: If you already have a website, a redesign is usually cheaper than a full design depending on the complexity of your current site.

9: What kind of programming will you use for my site?

Why? An especially important question if you’re considering making changes to and maintaining your website yourself.

10: In whose name will the domain be registered?

Why? It’s better to have the domain registered in your name so that you have ownership over it if you would like to change the register in the future.
