10 Most Important Tips To Training Your Puppies - By: DJ Bundy

Congratulations on acquiring your new puppy! You will very quickly, if you haven’t already come to love and adore this little fury animal. Ever dream that your new addition can be a CGC (Canine Good Citizen) one who is well behaved and dependable at all times. With the proper training done with care and dedication, your dream can come true. Just keep in mind that pups start learning from day one and need to be taught what right, wrong, and proper socialization is.

Like children, puppies need constant supervision and training. Training does not have to be an ordeal; just keep in mind these 10 simple rules:

  1. You need to keep an eye on him at all times while your pup is in training. If you cannot then you must enclose in him a restricted area. The pup will settle down more quickly if you create a schedule around his training. Include the following in his schedule: hourly bath room visits; eating times; rest periods; walk; play time; training; and so on. A pup that has a busy day and a set routine has no time to be bored and get into mischief.

  2. Teach the pup to respect you. Dogs are used to living in a pack and will instinctively follow a leader. Establish your leadership right away in no uncertain terms. Training will become much easier as the pup will learn to obey you at all times and not try and challenge your authority.

  3. Positive training methods need to be used at all times. You do not want to shout at, hit, or punish a dog. Not only is it cruel but will lead to behavioral problems. Use of electric shocks, prong collars, sprays, etc. should never be used under any circumstance

  4. Teach the pup “nothing in life is free.” This is a system that is widely acknowledged as a useful training tool. If you practice this, the pup will learn that to get something like love, a walk, or treat, he must behave well.

  5. Teach the meaning of “NO,” from day one. Any behaviors like jumping, mouthing, tug-o-war, barking, or running out of open gates and doors are to be discouraged. Good behavior is to be praised and ignore or walk away when there is bad behavior. It won’t take long for the pup to learn that when he misbehaves he will lose his companion/playmate.

  6. The best way to correct a behavior is to catch the pup in the act and startle him by rattling a can of pebbles. Once done make him correct his behavior and immediately offer him a treat and praise. Scolding a pup after an event is of no use since he will not recall what happened earlier.

  7. The use the pup’s name positively. Never say “BAD TOM,” or “NO TOM,” as this can only confuse him as he will think that calling his name associates to something bad. The pup needs to associate his name with happy events like hugs, petting, walks, treats, and such. If this happens he will come willingly when you call out his name.

  8. The training schedule should be around 10 minutes thrice a day. Using long repetitive lessons can be boring and the pup will most likely lose interest in learning. His learning should be fun; and make sure to include some trick training commands like sit, down, come and etc.

  9. The lessons will be more enjoyable for both of you if you can bond with the pup The pup needs to look forward to spending time with you and not avoid you by running away or hiding

  10. The pup needs to be socialized early. Socialization is probably one of the most important lessons you need to teach your pup Learning to be around other animals, people, sounds, vehicles, and other activities is very important in the proper growth to maturity for your pet. So, make sure his dally training routine includes introducing the pup when he is little to everyday activities and sounds. Take him to the mall/ park, introduce him to children and other pets, and make him unafraid of the vacuum and garden hose.

  11. In closing, you, as a pet-parent have chosen to train the dog yourself. The level and extent you choose to train depends on you as well as the learning abilities of your dog. As you know, different dogs like humans have varied talents. Choose well and both you and your pup will have fun times together.

Good luck and have a happy rich-rewarded life with your new furry animal.
