10 Exercises to Improve Writing Skills - By: Chit Servito

Writing skills are specific abilities that help the writer bring across his message to his readers in a well-written piece, simple enough to be understood and meaningful enough to have an impact in them. But these skills do not come overnight. It will take a lot of patience and determination, plus a ton of writing experiences.

There are simple exercises you could do to improve your writing skills:

1. Grab a picture of anything and write about it.
With the picture in front of you, write anything about it. Stare at it and describe it. What’s in it; who’s in it; when and where was it taken. This will improve your usage of nouns and adjectives.

2. Write a journal entry.
Write about what happened to you on a specific day; the things you did or people you have talked with. It may be as simple as doing your laundry or watching a television show. Write it as if you were talking to a friend.

3. Write about an unforgettable memory.
Most of the time, our unforgettable experiences are the ones we narrate the best. Write about a certain happening in your life that has made a huge impact in you. The pictures in your memory are vivid enough for you to describe it clearly in written words.

4. Write a How-to.
You could write about how to prepare your favorite meal, how to ride a bicycle, or how to operate an electronic gadget. This simple activity is a good exercise in strengthening your verbs.

5. Describe yourself.
The person who knows you better is you. This fact would make it easier to write about this topic. Start from your physical appearance, perhaps from head to toe; then your likes and dislikes, and your dreams and inner thoughts.

6. Write about your ultimate dream.
Everyone has this “something” they badly want in their life. Write about it. Mention why you want it and how you will be able to achieve or acquire it. If a person feels very passionate about something he will be inspired to write about it.

7. Take a walk and write about it.
Go outside your room or your house and take a stroll, perhaps around the yard, garden, or garage then write about it. Cite the things you saw. If you have been to a garden, it is nice to write about an insect you have encountered, a flower you have appreciated, or a withered plant you felt pity to.

8. Pick out a line from any literary form and write about it.
You could write about a line from your favorite song, a quotation from a movie, theatre play, poem, or book. Expound the idea in it. The line should be short to test and hone your ability to stretch and elaborate a thought.

9. Play with your imagination.
Try to write about an unreal thing, person, or place. Invent a gadget or a cartoon character. Describe how they look like. Illustrate their abilities, perhaps their supernatural powers. You could also create an unrealistic world that only exists in your imagination. Explain how to get there, how it looks like, or who lives there.

10. Pick a personality and write about him.
It may be a celebrity, a political figure, an athlete, or a neighbor. Make sure you know this person enough for you to describe him. If he is famous, write about why is he so. This activity will help you prepare to write good personality profile type of essays.
