10 Essential Commands for Training Golden Retrievers - By: Carson Burnett

Training golden retrievers is not as hard as it may sound. In general, golden retrievers are highly intelligent animals who want nothing more to than to please their master and to have fun doing it.

Most dog owners are aware of the importance of training golden retrievers to stay, sit and fetch. However, there are other just as important commands that you should be teaching your retriever.

1. Come - The most important command is come. Usually, you will use your dog's name in combination with this command. You must use this command to get your dog to come back to you if they are running where they should not be or if they break free from the leash.

2. Down - The down command is used to get the dog to go down to their stomach. This command is an essential part of training. In addition, it is more comfortable than sitting for you dog if you need him or her to wait a minute or so.

3. Drop It - This command is especially important because it gives you a way to protect your dog from potentially harmful substances. Likewise, you can also protect your leather boots from becoming a chew toy.

4. Heel - This is an important command to stay by your side when walking or running, even if you do not use the leash. When you do use a leash, this command will keep your golden retriever from pulling on the leash.

5. Leave It - Similar to the Drop It command, this command will help keep an inquisitive retriever out of trouble. If your dog tries to chew or consume something they should not, this command will deter such behavior.

6. No - In situations when Leave It is not enough, you need to use the No command. This will work for training golden retrievers not to jump, bite or chew. You should begin training your friend with this command when he or she is a young puppy. Sooner is better with this one.

7. Off - If you keep your golden retriever in the house with you, this command should be used to keep him or her off your bed, sofa, etc. This command can also be used for training not to jump on people.

8. Okay - You need to have a command that lets your dog know that they have completed the task you wanted them to perform. For example, if you command your dog to sit or wait, when you no longer need them immobile, use this command to release them.

9. Sit - This is one of the easiest commands. It is useful in situations when your dog becomes excited, such as at meal times. Once you train your dog to sit, he or she will be easier to manage and are not as likely to chase cars or small animals, jump on people or fight other dogs.

10. Stay - This command can be used in combination with the Down or Sit command. You will be able to protect your dog from harm that may come from chasing something, running across the street, attacking the postal carrier, etc.

These are just a few of the most essential commands. As your dog ages, you will be able to implement more and more commands into your training sessions. Just remember to use simple one or two word commands, and always reward your dog when the command is followed correctly.
