would Gary Player win more tournaments today with modern gold clubs and golf equipment - By: callumwill3564

I was reading a very interesting article recently about Gary Player who, as the winner of 9 major championships, is one of the most successful golfers of all time. Couple his major wins with the 165 tournament wins and it is easy to see why Gary is quite rightly considered to be a golfing legend.

Soon after reading the article I turned the TV onto a golf tournament and watched in awe as Bubba Watson and J.B. Holmes boomed drive after drive down the fairway. Turns out that whilst both of these players average over 300 yards in driving, most tour professionals nowadays also manage to average out at between 275 and 292 yards. No mean feat!

This data starting making me think about the technological developments in golf equipment over the past 20 to 30 years, particularly golf clubs and golf balls, and I found myself pondering the question of how Gary Player might have fared in tournament golf had he been a young man beginning today.

When Gary starting playing in the late 1950’s, golf was a completely different game. Golf Drivers were made from wood, probably persimmon, and golf balls were not like the ones we use today possessing none of the distance and spin characteristics we all now take for granted. Golf courses weren't massively long relying instead on good design and meaningful traps. Golfers of the day relied upon good technique and a total control of the tools of their trade.

Golf today has been revolutionised by developments in golfing equipment. Materials used now are the ones that for a long period would have only been affordable in the space and high-tech industries. Golf Balls fly higher and longer catapulted along at massive speed by golf clubs that are now restricted by the laws of golf with regards to head size. Such has the advance been in the technology side of golf that many championship courses have had to be toughened up either through the addition of length, tougher hazards or even a mixture of both. And yet lots of today’s modern professionals still have the ability to beat these courses up on regularly.

The answer to the Gary Player question is obvious. He'd have been successful in the game of golf regardless of the time period in which he played. In possession of natural talent and recognising that hard work brings rewards he'd have used today’s modern golf clubs and golf equipment to his advantage. Indeed, I'd personally venture the view that he would've been much more successful potentially winning more majors. Can that be said of the modern ‘boom boom’ generation were the positions reversed?
