playing golf – bad day with the golf equipment - By: callumwill3564

Following my return from a very recent non-golfing holiday I've just ventured out on the course for my first game in over Ten days. Having arrived at the course brimming with anticipation and excitement, golf equipment all newly cleaned and sparkling, I left it depressed and forlorn. Another victim of the ills this wonderful, stupid, game can heap upon the person.

Not sure with regards to you but these days I only appear to have good rounds on the course or bad ones. There don’t appear to be any grey days; days when things just appear to be so so; days when you leave the course and feel quietly content.

With such thoughts at heart, and in order to reduce stress levels, I've chosen to commit to word the 5 worst things about life on the course on a bad day. Are there any people out there that agree? Have you got similar dislikes or some which are different? Maybe after my next good round I'll list my view of the very best 5 things that happen on the course. Might be a wait though so don’t hold your breath!

3 putt holes - when it’s not your day using the golf putter it’s not your day. Nothing worse than getting on the green in regulation and leaving your first putt 4 feet short of the hole. After the first 3 putt hole there always seems to be a couple more in a similar vein. Not helped by your playing partner’s statements of sympathy - which we all know are false particularly if we have a small wager on the match!

Chipping into bunkers - approach shot lands behind a bunker. Good day ends in a fantastic chip to the green close to the flag. Bad day, after perhaps a number of 3 putt holes as well as perhaps some pulled drives, chip lands right smack bang into the middle of same bunker. Are there cosmic beings around somewhere which make this so?

Pulled drives - occurs to all of us but hey, where do they suddenly originate from? Set-up is identical, takeaway and swing feels exactly the same, nevertheless the ball suddenly will take off as if it has a mind of its own. Very destructive over a tree lined course.

Plugged bunker lies - ok so such things happen to all of us occasionally. Not merely on a bad day but I've included them here because I find it difficult to have any control whatsoever as I get them out. Embarrassing to need to shout ‘Fore’ though when playing this type of bunker shot!

Slow play - the bane of any golf course. On a good day however, slow players are only about bearable. But on a bad day don’t these slow players draw out the worst in us? Clock watching, sighing, shouting ‘get a move on’ in to the wind (with the knowledge that the players in the front can’t hear), inclinations to blast a drive at them, arm gesticulations and all additional routines golfers have developed through the years to let the group in the front understand that they should stop wasting time. Rarely makes a difference though does it. These individuals occupy another time dimension to the most of us.

Ok. That’s my rant over for today. Regardless of the negatives that a bad trip to the course may bring it's all outweighed by the major highs this wonderful game can deliver. Birdied the final hole today so at the very least left with one happy memory. One of the that keeps bringing me back time and again.
