Writing A Novel Should Start With An Outline - By: Justin Davis

We all know that writing isn't easy, more so when you are writing a novel, especially when it is your first work. For those who have prior experiences in writing novels, they will tell you that it is best to start with an outline. But not all authors are doing this. In fact, some would rather let their ideas flow freely and let their stories branch out on their own. The problem with this is that you could just end up having a convoluted plot that it becomes unnecessarily complicated and exhausting to read. This is why for beginners, it's always good to draft an outline and get everything on it before developing your story.

Unless you are a pro, writing a story with no outline can lead you to two pitfalls you'd rather avoid:

Confusing Personas

When you present your characters from the beginning of your novel, it is expected that you stick to these types of characters unless there are others who are necessary to the story. Sometimes, writers can get too engrossed that they're tempted to add more characters later on chapters just for the sake of making the appear deeper. This can actually boomerang on the author because people generally like simple stories and depth is usually expected from the primary characters. There is no need to add to many characters as the story evolves because this only leads to misunderstandings and this is something readers will not enjoy, especially if it does not really help the story at all.

Convoluted Plot

Just as you should avoid a complicated string of characters, you should also keep your piece simple but interesting. You don't need a plot to have many sub-plots just to achieve the depth that you may be aiming for. Usually, people enjoy novels where the storyline is focused on a small set of characters. One advantage of this is you will be able to present each character and occasion in more detail without having to include new dimensions to your story. This means you will have to avoid including unnecessary elements. One way to tell if an event or character you would like to add is unnecessary is actually to examine if this addition is going to affect or change anything about your plot or the way the story is going to come out. If it doesn't, then you're better off excluding it.

Eventually, once you write your novel without an outline, you just may lose the focus and baffle your readers about what you really want to say. So again, unless you're a pro, giving those fingers a free rein on your laptop may not are employed in your favor. It's still better to learn the ropes by holding it.
