I believe this topic is an overlooked yet essential element to the success of student achievement. As educators and policy makers, we often like to analyze the cognitive problems students face. These problems are relatively focused on a child's upbringing, genetics, social economic status, and much more. We can diagnose an academic digression based solely on how much activity the brain waves receive at an early age, but we never really connect that our body is connected to the brain. This means that what we put inside our body also affects the brain. Research have shown that the brain functions at a higher level when the body intakes a substantial amount of water. What I'm really getting at is if the government wants to pass laws such as NCLB or mandate that all teachers are highly qualified and students meet a yearly AYP based upon standardized testing, then we have to consider everything we are doing to ensure that students are not given a disservice.

Education is meant to be a preparation for life whether it is reading, mathematics or character education. Providing students with an opportunity to learn how to cook can indirectly reach goals of academic achievement such as: eating healthier, building the economy by providing a trade, teaching social and domestic skills, provides opportunity for incorporation of math, science and reading, and most importantly, influencing less intake of fatty foods that often cause obesity and health problems for our young achievers. No, the problem may not begin with food and nutrition, but it is in the equation and until we adhere to every effort of making the most out of student achievement, we will always be in a state of questions, wondering if we have done enough. Besides, some teachers practically teach to the test and often feel their creativity in the classroom is expunged. Cooking in the classroom would allow for some of that creativity to seep back into the classroom.

While parents may be heavily involved in one school versus another school where parents are hardly ever seen, Today’s parent is almost always working. There use to be a time where mothers taught their daughters how to cook, clean, and do all the domestic light work needed for a household. Father’s taught there sons’ how to bring home the bacon for the family. Now, there is no time with the hustle and bustle of working long hours. Children are living life in single parent homes or grandparents are raising the children and neither have the time or education to offer the child the fundamentals he or she needs in social or academic development. Cooking in the classroom allows teachers an opportunity to offer this element. What a child may not get from home can be offered in school. It would help them academically and take them into life with a skill that gives and gives back.

Learning to cook not only meets needs of the student academically, but if lightens the load of all parents that wished there was a moment in time where they could teach their son or daughter the importance of nutrition and healthy living. Now we are in a new generation where even the parents don’t understand the value of this Cooking concept and how the lack of this experience affects their child’s academic progress. If we are not in tune with the importance of cooking as a part of curriculum, we will soon experience an era where the brain, body, and nutrition don’t work hand in hand. The question then becomes, “Where do we go from here?”
