Vision Goggles And How They Were Patterned - By: Justin Davis

Our eyes have their limitations and it has its own faults. However, mother nature had its way of compensating each weakness so that such weaknesses are transformed to its maximum potential. Known to be color blind, dogs and cats have better peripheral visions than man and can see better even in total darkness.

Daytime birds see greater range of colors than humans do while hunting birds have binocular vision that allow them to see their prey even from thousands of feet away. Bats rely primarily on echolocation which functions similar to radar system and allow them to navigate in total darkness making them locate their prey in their exact location. The restrictions on the human visions and others which humans are deficient of, however, is compensated by our ingenuity and intellect which make us superior above all creations, in practically applying science and mathematics together.

Night vision goggles are one of the advancements that has been made in the field of science and technology coupled with mathematics are. In warfare and military way back, nighttime combat proved to be an exercise in futility. During World War I, torches, lamps and flamethrowers which brought terror to the British and French forces, made from burning solidified coals and sulfur used to illumine night combat. By World War II, the use of night vision goggles was introduced although its use was limited because of some major flaws. The quality of night vision goggles greatly improved through the years and its use has become very vital in the success of many military and police operations. How do these equipment apply or interrelate to an ordinary civilians daily life?

Night vision goggles are extensively used in surveillance operations. You never know that your neighbor whom you think of as an ordinary civilian going about his daily activities, is wanted for criminal charges abroad. You are oblivious about the activities of the house adjacent to you. They may be doing surveillance to one of your neighbors using vision goggles. While you are enjoying watching your favorite opera singer perform, military personnel are keeping you safe by doing security checks in every corner.

Military personnel conducting rescue activities primarily rely on night vision goggles for the success of their operation. However night vision goggles are used, they are basically engineered to compensate what human eye lacks and its invention proved to be a hallmark in the field of warfare.

Night vision goggles use an electro optical imaging device which is able to detect both visible and near infrared energy sources and then is able to intensify these energy sources further in order to provide a visible image for viewing at night. Sometimes people will often refer to them as NVG's instead. Today's night vision goggles can either be held by a person in their hands or be mounted on to a helmet.
Although the general public are able to obtain and use these night vision devices, more often than not they are used by law enforcement agencies and the military. Initially these devices were used by the military forces during the Vietnam war and have gone through many stages of development since then and currently the US Military are now using a 4th generation version of the ones originally developed.
The prices of these night vision goggles can cost as little as a couple of hundred dollars to some of them costing around $6,000. However there are some 3rd generation goggles which are of a very high quality and can cost less than a $1,000 and are more widely available to the general public than the 4th generation ones are.
There are two kinds of night vision goggles in use today and these are the passive and active. Passive night vision goggles are able to pick up any light within the immediate area where the person using them is located and then magnify this light several times over by use of the image intensifier.
You will often see this type of night vision being used when reporters are reporting from a war zone and the pictures that you seen on the TV in front of you will have a green tint to it. The reason why green is used in most night vision devices is because the human eye is very sensitive and is able to discern things more clearly when it comes in various shades of green. Plus using green helps the user's eyes to readjust more quickly once the goggles have been removed compared to other colors that have been tried.
