If you are still in school, then it is very important to have good spelling skills. Many times you will be marked off if you have misspellings, even if it is not an English class. Teachers expect you to be able to spell (unless you are very young) and they may find fault if you hand them something with a lot of spelling errors. They may take them for typos and feel that you just did not put forth the time to give a polished piece of work. Your high school grades will affect what college you get into and your college grades could influence the job you get. Do not lose points because you cannot spell.

It will help you get a job

You often have to hand in different written items when looking for a job. You will hand in your resume for most professional jobs, for instance. Even if you get someone else to check this for you, you still might have to fill out a job application on the spot. If you cannot spell at an adequate level, then someone might doubt your intelligence and be less likely to give you the position.

It can help you during your job

Many jobs require you to write different items. Someone might not feel like you are professional if you are handing them a bunch of items with misspellings. The company may not be happy if these items are going to customers or clients and thus reflecting on the company as a whole. It may even hinder your advancement.

Others might not understand you in personal correspondence

Even one misspelled word can make an entire sentence intelligible. You do not want others to have difficulty understanding what you are writing. Also, when you are sending out professional letters you want to appear composed and professional. Someone might not take you as seriously if they feel like you do not have basic spelling skills.
