The Largest Man-Made Lake in China - Qiandao Lake - By: Grace Fan

Qiandao Lake is man-made lake in Chun’an County of Zhejiang Province which was form since the completion of Xinanjiang hydroelectric station. It covers an area of 573 square kilometers and has storage capacity of 17.8 billion cubic kilometers. There are 1078 islands in the lake. The total area of the islands in the lake is about 86 square kilometers. Qiandao Lake is surrounded by the hills covered by lush trees.

The lake is also famous for its clear and drinkable water. The water in the Qiandao Lake is used to produce the renowned Nofu Spring (the brand of mineral water). The islands in the lake are characterized with different shapes and views and the featured islands include Bird Island, Snake Island, Monkey Island, Lock Island and the Island to Remind You of Your Childhood. Knowing as “Green Qiandao Lake”, the forest coverage rate reaches 95% and was approved by the Ministry of Forestry to be one of national forest parks in 1986. The scenic area of Qiandao Lake contains great species diversity including 1824 kinds of vascular bundle, over 20 kinds of national-level rare trees and so on.

The Qiandao Lake is divided into six section including Southeast Lake District, Central Lake District, Northwest Lake District, Southwest Lake District, Northeast Lake District and Fuxi Stone Forest. In the Southeast Lake District can be found Tianchi Lake, Mishan Island, Guihua (sweet osmanthus) Island, Laoan Island, Laoshan Island. In the Central Lake District, the visitors can appreciate Qiandao Lake Fishing Village, Longshan Hai Rui Memorial Temple, Bird Island, Monkey Island, Peacock Island, Mink Island. The Northwest Lake District is featured with cultural landscapes such as Fangxi (the leader of peasant uprising in Song Dynasty) Memorial Temple. The Southwest Lake District with numerous islands is the best place to appreciate the scene of Qiandao Lake. Fuxi Stone Forest is located forty kilometers from the center of Qiandao Lake and is made up of three parts including Xishan part, Turquoise part and Hawksbill parts. It is praised as “the first Stone Forest in southeast China”.

From September to November is the best time to visit Qiandao Lake when it is less rain and cool. It is too hot and damp in summer and cold in winter.
