When you wear something that looks and feels good, you’re going to be more relaxed and confident. Choose something semi-dressy so you look professional. When in doubt, a pair of nice slacks and a tailored shirt or blouse are always acceptable. Add a sweater or jacket and you’re set for whatever the temps are inside and out. Be sure each piece of clothing is clean, pressed and in good repair. It should also be easy to move around in when you bend and reach. Avoid tight clothing, low necklines and bare midriffs. Wear low-heeled shoes that are comfortable, clean and polished or buffed if necessary. The shoes you wear will either cramp your style or carry you through the day with confidence.

The way you hold yourself says how you feel about yourself. If you slump and slouch, you show a lack of confidence. If you hold your head up and walk with a purposeful, easy stride, you look ready for the day. Practice good posture at home and try walking a few laps around the house with a book on your head. When you stand in front of a class, hold your head up, straighten your shoulders and make eye contact. Good posture while sitting is important, too. Don't slide down in your chair or lean all over the desk. Set a good example for the students by using good posture.

If possible, substitute teachers should visit the campus to learn the layout of the school grounds and classrooms. This helps you avoid looking "lost” when you show up on that first day. Introduce yourself to the secretary, principal and other teachers. Ask if you can sit in on a class in the age level you hope to assist.

When you get the call to substitute, the teacher will provide a lesson plan, specific instructions and/or materials for that day. Go early enough to scan over these papers and get a feel for your responsibilities. Some students like to test the substitute teacher. They want to see how much she knows about the lesson and/or the teacher's expectations. The more you prep yourself ahead of time, the better prepared you will feel.

You are in a position of authority when you substitute for another teacher. It’s a good idea to establish that soon after the bell rings. No matter how much you are tested or questioned, keep your cool and project an air of confidence. Remember, you have the authority of the school principal behind you. There seems to be a class clown in every group, and he's always looking for a chance to act out. If you’ve done your homework, you already know the rules of class conduct and you know whom to call if things start to get out of hand. Never hesitate to carry through on that if you feel the need to do so.
