Mental illness in children is on the rise for many reasons: bullying at school, being in a hurricane, violence in the family and/or community, seeing a school shooting, worries about terrorism, and a change in brain chemistry at maturation. An increasing number of children are experiencing Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD. Depression in children, including elementary age kids, is on the rise. If you search the internet you will find many facts about mental illness in children. These facts tell a story.

Mental Illness, for some it can be a one off relatively short episode, or for others the illness may go on for years. I am a carer, and certainly no medical expert, but I am speaking from experience of my own situation and from observing many other situations with people who I personally know and who have suffered chronic illnesses.

There are many ways you can support a family member that has a severe mental illness. Remember, that you loved this person before they became sick and you can still love this person with their symptoms. It will be hard and there will be days when you question why you continue to try to help but know that you are really lending a hand in treatment. The love and support from you can increase your loved ones chances of recovering.

Symptoms:

Some of the most noticeable symptoms of mental illnesses, especially severe ones like Manic Depression, include those that can be observed through physical changes. Someone who is beginning to show signs of or is currently suffering from a mental disorder or mental illness may have a dazed look, or lose concentration easily when carrying out regular daily activities. Granted, being able to recognize the physical symptoms of a mental patient may be difficult at first, but once one sees that their friend or family member is making such physical changes, he or she will find it gradually easier to recognize such conditions.

Nursing Homes: Because those who are mentally ill sometimes are in need of long-term medical care, there are times when a nursing home might be necessary or appropriate. However, many nursing homes aren't equipped to adequately address mental health care issues. When selecting a nursing home for a loved one, ensure that it specializes in serving those with chronic mental illness.

Assisted Living Units: An assisted living unit, as its name implies, is most appropriate for those people who are high functioning and stable. With assisted living, there is minimal staff supervision and residents typically live in apartments and receive services like meals, laundry, and medication supervision.

All things considered, dealing with a mental illness definitely is not easy as it requires a lot of patience and perseverance. However, by using the proper treatment for the diagnosed mental disorder and seeking help from the professionals, the symptoms of these major mental illnesses can be treated effectively. Thus, understanding these mental illness symptoms well will enable you and your loved ones to be in better control when facing with such situations.
