Impact of Floods - By: Justin Davis

On September 20-21, 2009, a continuously horrific and deadly rainfall fell from the skies of Douglasville, Atlanta, leaving almost the entire city submerged under ten feet of flood water. It even reported six tragic drowning deaths. Though severe flooding is extremely rare, significant property losses, tremendous destruction and loss of lives often loom in the aftermath.

Natural disasters such as floods brought by heavy storms, do not happen on an instant, though but it is better to be prepared more than anything else. Avoid placing your chances for survival in the hands of another person. This will be like going to a war without any weapons at all. Arming yourself and preparing for the worst is crucial to your survival. It is top priority that you have the telephone numbers of the different evacuation centers and rescue centers in your area or even neighboring towns and cities if you already know that you live in a flood-prone area. Place in an emergency bag some emergency medical kit, bottled water, flashlight, cellular phone where it will come handy in case of evacuation. Do you know the things that you have to do and remember when you are stranded in flood-stricken land?

Presence of mind is the very basic that you should have. Presence of mind makes you think logically organized while panic attack clouds your decision-making abilities thus hinders sound judgment especially in life-threatening situations. Try to take deep breathes, compose yourself and focus on the situation when panic attacks. Taking deep breathes during panic attacks have been proven to decrease the severity of panic thus helps one to think wisely.

Since fire often times simultaneously occur during flashfloods, be sure to unplug all electrical equipment and make sure that the main source of electricity is switched off and the gas pipeline outlet is shut off. This will not only prevent electrocution but also minimize the danger of potential fire, totally damaging your home.

Transfer your valuables as well as furniture to the highest and safest part of the house keeping them away from the door. Put it inside a deposit box if you have one where possible looters will not see.

Immediately leave your building but do not walk on flooded area as floodwater as shallow as six inches deep will definitely push you away as soon as the flood warning is released. If you are in a car, drive to safer and higher grounds as water current can push your car uncontrollably downstream.

We can confidently say that floods don't do any good to the environment nor to people. There are several negative effects of flood damage, especially when the flood level is high and proper water damage treatments are not done immediately. Untreated water damage will lead to growth of harmful pathogens or disease-causing microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi and might cause severe damage to your structures, especially those made of wood.
The first thing that flood victim has to do is clean up the mess the flood leaves in the house. Mud from flood contains bacteria and germs and these will be all over floors, furniture and walls. If possible, use a shovel and try to remove as much mud as you can before washing off the rest with a hose. Not only will this be messy but it will also be very tiring work.
The growth of molds and mushrooms could also be problem. Molds and mushrooms can grow in humid conditions in just 24 to 48 hours. The airborne spores from mushrooms reach levels comparable to those of mold and pollens and this is why many face mushroom problems after a flood because they can create health hazards that cause respiratory health conditions and allergies from mushroom spores.
Flood water is full of pathogens that are harmful to your health. Thus, exposure to diseases and illnesses is another negative effect of flood damage. Kitchenware should be washed properly, rinsed with clean water and sterilized to ensure that they will be germ-free.
