How to Enjoy Golf and Have Golf Fun - By: Chrissie Mason

Too many golfers are far too serious. There often isn't enough golf fun on the fairway. While the game certainly has a serous side to it, this shouldn't ever detract from the fun to be had. Unlike team sports, golf is a game played essentially alone. Yes, you may have a partner or two, but you play your own shots alone, maybe being followed by an electric golf cart. This allows for a degree of fun.

Take golf dress, for example. It should be obvious to anyone that the outrageous golfing dress that has been considered fashionable down the ages is in reality a joke. Players new to the game observe what seasoned golfers are doing and copy them. they dress in a similar fashion, look ridiculous, never realising they are now the butt of a very old joke. At least, it must be like that. How could anyone dress so flamboyantly and badly from choice? No - this is golf fun at its finest!

Woods are not made from wood. They are made from metal, but they are not called metals; they are called woods. Confused? You will be... It's nice to know that golfers have such a good sense of humour, though to be fair, woods were once made from wood, which is why they were called woods in the first place. In the mid to late 1970 it was accepted by golfers that woods made from metal, not to be confused with irons, which are also made from metal, could add length and accuracy to a drive. Around that time woods became metal, but the name of woods stayed as woods. That's more golf fun, apparently!

There's a lot of golf fun to be had with the various terms used in the game. While there are many publications all trying to be right about the origins of the various terms, it soon becomes obvious that most of them are trying too hard and they simply don't know the answers. Why do golfers shout "fore!" Why is a caddies called a caddie? Why is a good shot a birdie, an eagle or even an albatross? And where the heck did bogey come from?

By and large it's all a mystery, though many publications and web sites will give you an answer. Are they right? Maybe. No one seems to know for certain. Does it matter? No, not really. Golf isn't the only game with strange terms used. It isn't the only sport where people dress funny either. Cricket has a lot to answer for when it comes to the ridiculous, but there's a lot of golf fun to be had too.
