It is probably safe to say that most parents are more concerned about the dating/drug/drinking/etc habits rather than the sleep habits of teenagers these days. While those are absolutely critical areas to be dealt with in the lives of our nations teens, we might need to move sleep up on the priority list a bit. How our teens deal with sleep not only affects their performance in school, but their health, mental well being and a host of other issues. It effects more than most parents realize.

Insomnia and sleeping problems are increasingly common. Some people have trouble falling asleep and end up lying awake for hours every night. Some people have trouble staying asleep and end up waking up repeatedly for no apparent reason. Others get to sleep and stay asleep just fine, but they wake up feeling tired as if they hadn't gone to bed at all.

The onset and end of puberty is marked by radical changes inside the body. Adolescence is often mistaken as an age where children start showing agitation or 'rebel' attitude. However, doctors believe that it is due to the production of certain hormones inside the body that result in 'weird' behavioral patterns among adolescents.

Do not spend too much time in bed. It will be better for you to go to bed later, or wake up earlier. Thus, create a sleep schedule. Less time in bed will make you fall asleep easier and a good schedule will create a good sleeping habit for you.

You should keep this consistent bed time not only during weekdays, but also during weekends. Having fun during weekend is inevitable, but your body will keep on following your weekday schedule.

The quality and quantity of sleep are equally important. Your selection of hours for sleep is also equally important.

How Much Sleep Do You Need

A healthy adult person requires 6-7 hours of sleep. Having a consistent sleeping pattern is also important. Children, old age people, and people suffering from diseases can sleep longer than seven hours.

Slow Things Down Just Before Bed

We've all gone to bed excited before and struggled to get to sleep because we were in an excited state. It actually worse for children as they are more prone to becoming overstimulated. Thirty minutes before bed, you should set down a regular routine that slow your child down. It maybe having a bath, reading a book and then saying good night to all their stuffed toys.

Quiet Your Bedroom- If your mind only associates your bedroom with sleep; it will make it much easier to fall asleep at night. To achieve this, all distractions should be removed from your bedroom. This includes the television, radio and computer. This way, it will be easier to use your bedroom exclusively for sleep and sexual activity.

Physical Activity- The ability to fall asleep and stay asleep depends greatly on physical fatigue. If you are physically inactive all day, your mind will still be tired at night but there is a good chance you body won't feel the same way. This is one of the reasons exercise during the day is so effective in helping you sleep at night.
