When you think of a website with global appeal, you probably imagine a domain name ending in ‘.com’. Most companies assume that this form of domain is a key to global markets because it fits in under so many circumstances. While a .com domain might be something that’s familiar in all parts of the world, it’s not really your best option when you want to appeal to a global market.

Having a .com domain may seem like the right fit for a global market, but that seeming advantage is also its biggest drawback. Sometimes appealing to all can give you a certain homogenous quality. Fitting in globally can often mean you don’t fit at all locally. In the case of search engine optimisation, this is particularly true.

As you might know if you’re already working on your site’s SEO, your domain can have a big effect on your search engine optimization plan. One of the ways the search engines use your domain is to provide information on locality. If you have a .com domain, you’re basically telling the search engines that you’re not interested in most local markets.

A better approach is to purchase a number of local domains, any which are relevant to your business, and direct them to your main site. This won’t solve all of your local problems, as it is necessary to add a certain local appeal to your pages for local SEO, but it is a good start.

Not every business has to invest in these multiple regional domains, and not every business can invest in them. Buying a .com domain might be the right fit for you, but it’s worth looking a little deeper into exactly what will work well for your business.
