Five tips for winter sightseeing in Edinburgh - By: David Connery

When you're in Edinburgh this winter don't get left in the cold! There is plenty to do and Edinburgh is simply a fantastic place to be during the cold months.

Even though Arthurs Seat may be covered in snow and the Royal Mile better resembles an ice rink, here is much to do in the city centre from the shopping in the international renowned German markets to the traditional Highland Village where you can purchase such items as Scottish food treats to woolly hats and Scottish teddy bears.

'Fun in the Gardens' is as its states is fun in Princes Street gardens where you can enjoy Edinburgh's outdoor ice rink, one of the largest in Europe, set in a stunning location at the foot of Edinburgh Castle in between Edinburgh's Old and New Town.

Equally, outside the city there is plenty on offer at the Hillend ski slope, the largest artificial ski slope in Europe with the main slope being over 400 metres long.

It's located in the heart of the Pentland Hills regional park in a spectacular hill range that enjoys the most beautiful views of Edinburgh during the winter season.

If you get too cold you can always pop to Edinburgh's Glenkinchie distillery and benefit from some of the excellent whiskies on offer. This distillery is only 20 minutes outside the city centre and offers tours and you can even meet the team!

Last but not least, remember to pick a quality Edinburgh hotel to really make your trip enjoyable. There are a range to choose from, from 4 star budget hotels to £300/night 5 star hotels with butler service, penthouse suites and champagne.

Just remember to check their walking distance to the above attractions as by the time you are finished your sightseeing, a dram will be well deserved. Just make sure you don't slip on your way back to your hotel.
