1. Adopt a positive attitude and be a 'yes person'
Those who see opportunities, solve problems, and say 'yes' are the ones who often receive promotions and climb up the company ladders quicker because problem solving is an incredibly valueable asset that all businesses require and are based on - you will often see that the people who are most senior in a company are natural problem solvers. Stop seeing the glass half empty and start seeing it half full.

2. Network, network, network
One of the best ways to find a job or to increase your value to a company is by developing your personal network of contacts. In most businesses 'who you know' is incredibly important and valueable. Use websites like Meetup.com, Eventbrite.com and Lanyrd.com to find events and conferences that you can attend and then meet new people in your industry. When you attend these events make a concious effort to meet as many people as you possibly can.

3. Fake it until you make it
By adopting the maneurisms such as dress sense, vocabulary, and approaches of those senior to you, you make a promotion more seamless as your seniors will see you as being more like them and therefore a smoother transition in the event of them having to find a replacement.

4. Invest in your knowledge
If you work for a company who invest in your training and knowledge, consider yourself incredibly lucky. Whether you're in this situation or not you have to be investing in your own knowledge and training as much as you can. Your knowledge is what sets you apart from peers and any knowledge you invest in will without a doubt return its value in future promotions and opportunities.

5. Your communication skills are your most important skills
A study of over one thousand companies in the United States suggested that communication skills are the most important skill that companies look for when employing new recruits, because compared to technical skills it's very hard to teach. Communication skills are also incredibly difficult to outsource and must be managed by a human, and because business relies so heavily on interpersonal relationships, it's fundamental that a company is full of people with great communication skills.
