A Day in Mayfair - By: Alfred Halfnight

The Mayfair district of London has become synonymous with wealth for several centuries and contains some of the most exclusive (and expensive) shops, hotels and residence in the world. The area is known for its custom-fitted men’s suits designed by the tailors on Savile Row and for such high-end jewelry stores like Aspreys, but there are plenty of things to see and do here that won’t cost an arm and a leg. The average tourist could easily spend a day or two in Mayfair and be fully entertained without spending a farthing, but one is likely to be sorely tempted by the myriad of opportunities to buy things one never knew existed but suddenly realizes one simply can’t live without.

Window-shopping doesn’t get any better than this - there are boutiques, jewelry shops, antique stores, toy stores (Hamley’s is the biggest in England, with seven floors), wine shops, grocery stores and more. Pretty much any item imaginable can be found here in Mayfair, but there are plenty of other non-commerce related attractions as well. There are parks including Regent’s Park and Hyde Park; good restaurants (and not all are expensive - try Seashell for the best fish & chips in the city); museums and other cultural attractions (the Royal Academy of the Arts is in Mayfair) and lots of historical addresses (everyone from Handel to Hendrix has lived here).

If you can afford it, the most exclusive London hotels are located here, but surprisingly there are several mid-range hotels in Mayfair that won’t charge a king’s ransom for a night’s stay. There is even a hostel, the Oxford Street Youth Hostel, but it’s a rather noisy place and not extremely cheap, with accommodations starting around 25 pounds per night.

Mayfair is one of the city’s most unique and fascinating neighbourhoods and any tourist to London should make it part of their itinerary. It might be a good idea to leave the Platinum card back at the hotel, though...
