2012’s Top Bridal Fashion Trends - By: Tatiana Porembova

Styles change and tastes evolve quickly in the world of couture wedding dresses. While it can seem that the wedding dress is one of the most consistently conventional items of clothing, the very fact that it exists within a tacitly agreed set of parameters means that bridal fashion is one of the most fascinating, subtle and personalised areas within the purview of fashion. Each year brings new ideas drawn from fresh inspiration, and following Kate Middleton and Sarah Burton’s dominance of 2011, 2012 emerges over the horizon as something of an unknown quantity. Here is a run-down of some of the bridal fashion world’s top picks for the year ahead:

Horsehair Braid: Horsehair braid has long been used in couture wedding dresses. The material is not actually made from any kind of horse product, but a kind of nylon braiding that provides the dress with a flexible but slightly stiffened hemline. Horsehair braid is often used to keep the longer styles of a train in shape, allowing the bride to move more easily while wearing the dress. In 2012, however, horsehair braid is likely to quit being a shrinking violet and is set to take its turn in the spotlight. This follows in the footsteps of 2011’s re-embracing of the corset - turning wedding dresses inside out by bringing the under-elements to the fore.

Two-Tiered Skirts: Across the pond, the fashion currents are strongly hinting that two-tiered or multiple-tiered skirts could become one of the most iconic moves in the world of couture wedding dresses. The current fashion is centred around dresses featuring two distinct tiers - a style that is incredibly flattering for women who have larger hips, balancing the dress out in three sections rather than the traditional two.

Seeing and Not Seeing: There were many different necklines on show on the bridal cat-walks during 2011, but 2012 seems destined to see the cleavages covered up and a new modesty to run alongside the West’s new found austerity. This doesn’t necessarily mean a return to simplicity, but an embracing of the “illusion neckline”, where a layer of sheer fabric, often with some stylish embellishments, covers the top of the body and shoulders, showing off the bride’s feminine shape but adding a vintage elegance.

This translucent, vintage trend applied to couture wedding dresses was seen in the recent British Royal Wedding. Kate Windsor opted for lace sleeves, and this look quickly became popular around the world. With fashion designers being the creative individuals - er, make that magpies - that they are, the craze for Middleton style has been snapped up by one and all. Lace sleeves were big in 2011, but the speeding oil tanker of wedding fashion may take some time to realise that they’re ‘so last year’.
