Bees will create their own amazing and breathtaking hives given time and the perfect location, so for those wanting to cultivate bees and produce honey or aid pollination, a natural one may seem like the best way to go. However, obviously it isn’t quite that simple and you are going to have no ability to easily collect honey or handle the bees correctly if they are not designed specifically with such tasks in mind.

Therefore, if you want to ensure you don’t have to kill the bees when you harvest the honey, buying beehives is the only solution. But which will be the best for those keeping bees? There are two main types – moveable frame hives and top bar hives, the most common being moveable frame ones. However, whilst these are more common, the best may well be a top bar hive.

Octagon beehives are an attractive and extremely practical form of hive that help to mimic the way a hive would be built in nature, allowing the bees to produce honeycombs from the top to the bottom. Their benefits are numerous for those keeping bees but ultimately they allow a cheap and easy to maintain solution which offers the ideal environment for the bees too, meaning that everyone wins. It makes the harvesting of the honey far easier too whilst also adding a great attractive focal point to a garden rather than some which can detract from the look of a garden.

So whilst movable frame hives may be more common, if you want the most versatile apiary, then buying an octagon hive may well offer you the best benefits all round. Either way, it is well worth understanding your own needs before you buy any hive to ensure you will be buying exactly the right one for you.
