There are many reasons to consider extending your education beyond the compulsory 18 years that you have to spend in school, not least because it increases your employment opportunities immensely. Continuing with your education gives you a chance to learn more about the world, as well as specialist skills which can help when it’s time to look for work. As well as improving your job prospects, staying within the education system enables you to meet a range of people with different opinions and perspectives. This can encourage you to listen more and thus leave you more open-minded and tolerant.

Not everyone enjoys the school experience, having been picked on by teachers and students alike. For some students studying is just a waste of time so they don’t even bother trying, while others find that no matter how hard they try their grades are still poor. If your time at high school wasn’t particularly enjoyable, it’s not particularly surprising if you choose not to go to college or university. However, it is you who misses out by choosing to give up on an education and get a job straightaway instead, as you’ll no doubt end up in a job that is poorly paid and that you hate doing.

Beyond your high school years there is much more choice when it comes to the subjects you can study and the approaches used to learn. You can decide to study subjects which will help you pursue the career you want, so that if you’re interested in cars you could always learn to be a mechanic, while if you enjoy styling people’s hair you could train to be a hairdresser. If you enjoy the more academic side of studying you could go to university and take a degree in subjects like History or English, while if you have a specific goal in mind, such as becoming a doctor, you could opt to take a medical degree.

Whichever route you take, continuing with your education will give you a chance to associate with people from different backgrounds and with different beliefs; you can end up forming close friendships with individuals who have completely different ideas to you. Thus, you have people to support you during your studies and to hang out and socialize with after you’ve finished studying, which is clearly a positive thing. Extending your education is therefore worthwhile, whatever time of life you decide to do this, as it can help you with your career and enhance your understanding of the world.
