Soaps are an important part of the office cleaning supplies and are a mixture of sodium and potassium salts of fatty acids which are used in combination with water for cleaning. The most common forms of occurrence for soaps are solid bars or viscous liquids and these are the traditional cleaning agents which have been in existence ever since the importance of cleaning was realized by humanity for sanitary reasons.

Soaps are alkaline in nature and derive their unique properties from the type of fatty acid on which they are based as well as the length of the carbon chain. As a result, soaps which are prepared with animal fat are generally insoluble where as the soaps which are prepared with coconut oil are extremely soluble and lather easily when combined with water and therefore more popular as sanitary products. Fatty acids which consist of less than ten molecules of carbon are not used for manufacture of soaps due to the irritation they cause and the intolerable odor which they emit.

Detergents, along with soaps, also form an important part of the office cleaning supplies as they represent substances which possess cleaning properties to a high degree. Most of the detergents are synthetic in nature and their since their molecular structures are same as that of soaps, they possess the same properties and the same cleaning action. Detergents are of different types namely cationic detergents, neutral detergents and intestinal natural detergents. While cationic detergents are found in shampoos and clothes rinse due to their germicidal properties, neutral detergents are found in dish-washing liquids and intestinal natural detergents are found within the human body.

Soaps and detergents are commonly used as office cleaning supplies as they contribute significantly to public health and hygiene. Due to their sanitary action, they reduce the presence of germs which are carriers of infectious diseases due to which the offices and places of work are considered as healthy places. While soaps can be used as personal cleaning products in form of bars, gels and liquid soaps detergents can be used effectively as stain removing agents and disinfectants within the office premises. Dishwashing soaps are used as a part of the office cleaning supplies in the canteen and food serving area where as detergents in form of boosters and water softeners are used extensively as part of the office cleaning supplies for cleaning the walls and floors.
