The Yangtze River, 6,300 kilometers long, is the largest river in China and the third largest in the world. And the world-renowned Three Gorges is on Yangtze River. The Three Gorges, consisting of the Qutang Gorge also called the Grand Three Gorges, the Wu Gorge and the Xiling Gorges, starts at Baidicheng of Fengjie in Chongqing and ends at Nanjinguan of Yichang in Hubei Province, extending for 193 kilometers. As one of top ten scenic spots in China, the Three Gorges is magnificent, splendid and wonderful, just like a scroll of Chinese landscape painting.

Qutang Gorge also called Kuixia Gorge starts from Baidicheng of Fengjie County, ends at Daxi Town, extending for 8 kilometers and famous for its grandeur. Wu Gorge starts from estuary of Daning River in the east of Wushan County and ends at Guandukou in Badong County extending for 46 kilometers. The Wu Gorge is famed for its elegant beauty of the forest-covered peaks, which is comprised of two parts, the western part consisting of Jinkuiyinjia Gorge and Jianchuan Gorge and eastern part, Tieguan Gorge and Menshan Gorge. Xiling Gorge extends for 66 kilometers which starts from the Zigui County of Yichang and ends at Lanjinguan of YiChang.

The Three Gorges is also one of main places that originated Chinese ancient culture. It is the birthplace of Quyuan (great patriotic poet in ancient China) and Zhaojun (one of famous ancient beauties). The famous ancient poets including Libai, Baijuyi, Sushi, etc had visited the Three Gorges and written many fantastic poems to describe the enticing beauty of it. Here is also ancient battlefield of Three Kingdoms where many heroes made great contributions for his people and his country. There are many interesting places along the way, to name a few, Baidicheng, Huangling Temple, Nanjinguan and Tsu Kuei.

The Three Gorges is also a place where people of Sichuan and Hubei live. The main nationalities here are Han and Tujia which remain many unique customs and habits of everyday life. The Chinese famous Dragon Boat Festival on the 5th of May in the lunar calendar is commemoration of Quyuan – a patriotic poet over two thousand years ago.
